Aunt Lai's Daily Routine and Professional Image

In a cozy apartment in Arcadia, Los Angeles, the busy daily routine of Aunt Lai, a postpartum caregiver, begins. From washing baby clothes to preparing breakfast, Aunt Lai demonstrates her meticulousness and professionalism in her daily caregiving. As the morning sunlight gently streams in, she carefully gathers the baby's soiled clothes, gently hand-washes them, and then puts them in the washing machine to dry. While the washing machine is running, Aunt Lai turns to prepare breakfast. She skillfully slices sweet potatoes, cooks millet porridge, and simultaneously turns on the gas stove to simmer the porridge slowly. Then, she fries a golden-brown fried egg, stir-fries a plate of tender chrysanthemum greens, and cuts up a plate of fresh fruit. Finally, she carefully arranges a dish of pickled olives and fermented tofu.

❒ Breakfast Preparation and Care for the New Mother
Aunt Lai explained, "Breakfast is very important for new mothers; it needs to be nutritious and easy to digest. Initially, we maintain a low-oil, salt-free diet to ensure the mother's health.  Over time, we gradually increase the salt content according to the mother's taste, while also carefully adjusting the amount to avoid excessive saltiness. In addition, we prepare some medicinal dishes to help reduce swelling and dampness, ensuring the mother receives comprehensive care during her postpartum recovery."

Then, Aunt Lai steadily carried the breakfast tray into the room of the new mother, Afeng. Afeng and her family are from Wenzhou, China, and they arrived in Los Angeles on August 1st, when Afeng was 24 weeks pregnant. Because they only had a six-month tourist visa, they chose to rent a fully furnished apartment in the bustling center of Arcadia, ensuring their daily life was well-arranged.

02 From Restaurant Owner to Nanny: A Life Story

❒ Restaurant Success and Investment Failure
In 1984, Aunt Lai immigrated to the United States with her relatives and started her restaurant business in Los Angeles. After more than ten years of hard work, she successfully opened six chain restaurants and registered a trademark. Her business thrived, employing over fifty people. Having achieved financial freedom, she owned a luxurious house and expensive cars, and decided to close her restaurants and retire.

However, with the rise of the investment boom in mainland China, many Taiwanese businesspeople opened factories there. Aunt Lai's family also established a grinding factory in Zhongshan, Guangdong, and encouraged her to invest. However, she did not foresee that a serious economic crisis was quietly approaching. "Initially, I didn't realize the huge risks of the investment.  Ultimately, the factory went bankrupt, and I had to withdraw funds from my savings to salvage the situation. In just a few years, almost all of my life savings were invested in it, leaving me almost penniless."

Challenges of Entering the Nanny Industry for the First Time
In 2006, Aunt Lai had sold off all her assets, leaving her with only one house. She sought help from relatives and friends, but was met with indifference and rejection. Two months later, she was struggling to pay for utilities, and her child was still in college, making her ineligible for a pension. Faced with this predicament, she desperately needed to find a job. Just as Aunt Lai was sinking into despair, she met the first "benefactor" in her life. This benefactor told her that although working as a nanny was harder than working in a restaurant, it was worth trying in order to pay off her debts.

Aunt Lai went to the home of the first new mother introduced by the agency and discovered that she was a regular customer at her restaurant. During their conversation, she confided in the mother about her current difficulties, and the mother expressed understanding and warmly invited her to join her family. With her intelligence and hard work, Aunt Lai quickly made a name for herself in the nanny industry.
