A New York Chinese family suspects their nanny of being an inside accomplice

According to the World Journal, a Chinese-language newspaper in the United States, a family in Flushing, Queens, New York, reported to the 109th Precinct on December 12th that their live-in nanny had stolen cash, diamond rings, jewelry, and watches worth tens of thousands of dollars.
The nanny, identified as "Aunt Liu," a woman from Guangdong province who had been living with the family and caring for their children for nearly a month, was hired through an advertisement. She is approximately 50 years old, about 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs around 130 pounds, has fair skin, and short hair. The victims expressed their misfortune and hoped that the public would provide information about the suspect and learn from their experience. They added, "Thankfully, the children are unharmed. If the nanny had done anything to the children, I would have gone crazy."

The victim, who has lived on 58th Avenue in Flushing for nearly ten years, said that his daughter was only a year and a half old. He and his wife placed an advertisement to hire a live-in nanny, and a woman named Ms. Liu, from Guangdong province, applied for the job. The victim said, "Ms. Liu lives in Brooklyn. She usually stayed at our house and only went home on weekends. My wife and I didn't think too much about it, and we didn't have a photo or any identification documents for her."
The victim described Ms. Liu's behavior as "strange," saying she "often had a mysterious expression, seemed preoccupied, and would stare blankly." She claimed to have been in the United States for about three to five years. One day, she disappeared without a word for several hours. The victim considered this behavior unacceptable and dismissed Ms. Liu on the 3rd. It wasn't until the 11th, when he checked his belongings, that he discovered several thousand dollars in cash, which had been stored safely, were missing. He immediately checked other valuables and found that his diamond ring, jewelry, and watches were also gone.

The victim reminded the public that when hiring a nanny, "you must check their work permit and ID; applicants with ulterior motives will not dare to show their documents."
The reporter interviewed several employment agencies regarding this incident. Red Apple Employment Agency stated that the nanny profession is sensitive, and the agency requires applicants to appear in person and provides basic information such as name, phone number, and experience, but they do not have the right to inquire about their immigration background. They advise employers to request copies of identity documents from employees. A staff member at the agency said, "Flushing is small, and people don't work at the same job forever. Many familiar faces come back looking for work, which makes it relatively safe."

A staff member at the Flushing Public Employment Agency stated that the agency is government-licensed and currently handles fewer "nanny/housekeeper" job placements. The staff member said, "We need to be responsible in our work. If a nanny theft incident occurs, it would be very troublesome. Therefore, we have handled fewer of these types of job placements in recent years. However, if we do arrange for a nanny, we require the job seeker to provide identification to the employer."
